New Adapters: OPC-UA, Bluetooth, and Modbus Now Available

We are happy to announce that three new adapters are now available in the LEAF marketplace. These additions cover some of the most widely deployed communication protocols in industrial and laboratory settings, making it significantly easier to connect existing infrastructure to your LEAF data pipeline.

OPC-UA Adapter

OPC Unified Architecture (OPC-UA) is one of the standards for industrial interoperability. When working with PLCs, SCADA systems, or modern industrial equipment, there’s a good chance OPC-UA is already in the mix.

The LEAF OPC-UA adapter connects to any OPC-UA server and subscribes to node values. It handles authentication, session management, and subscription-based data change notifications, then maps the results into LEAF’s standardised output format.

Use cases: PLCs, industrial controllers, SCADA systems, manufacturing equipment

Bluetooth Adapter

Wireless sensors are increasingly common in both lab and field environments, and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) has become the dominant short-range wireless protocol for low-power sensing devices. The LEAF Bluetooth adapter enables collection from BLE-capable sensors — covering device discovery, characteristic reading, and notification handling.

This adapter is particularly useful for environmental monitoring setups where running cables is impractical, as well as for portable or wearable sensing equipment.

Use cases: Environmental sensors, portable lab instruments, wearable monitors, BLE-enabled meters

Modbus Adapter

Modbus is one of the oldest and most widely used serial communication protocols in industrial automation. Decades of installed equipment speak Modbus RTU or TCP, and getting data out of those devices is now easier with the LEAF Modbus adapter.

The LEAF Modbus adapter supports both Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU, with configurable register maps to read coils, discrete inputs, holding registers, and input registers. It handles polling schedules and maps register values to named data points in the LEAF output schema.

Use cases: Legacy industrial equipment, energy meters, flow controllers, PLCs, sensors with RS-485 interfaces

All these adapters are available now in the marketplace. Each adapter page includes documentation on configuration and an example setup. If you run into issues or want to contribute improvements, the source is open on GitLab.
